Journal Entry #1 of Marcus
The sky was ashen as the tavern came into view, light pouring from the windows. Water poured from the sky as my companion and I approached on foot. We were exhausted as we had been walking all day already, and were eager to get some rest, but alas this was not to be. As soon as we entered we saw the commotion happening in front of us. Most of the patrons had encircled a few figures fighting in the center. Well, when I say fighting, I really mean three of them were kicking the fourth who was already passed out and covered in blood. I turned to my companion, Criella, who had already taken off her hood, hoping her tiefling form would distract from the fight. It didn't happen so I decided to step in. I raised my hand and muttered one of the first incantations I had ever learned, after which a small bolt of lightning arced out of my hand and hit the roof right at the center of the circle.
"Let him go!" Criella growled as she shifted her hand, a ball of fire growing in it. "Or else I will rain fire down on you all." The first three quickly retreated but the fourth refused to.
"Little Lady." The hulking orc figure approached, having to duck because his eight foot frame didn't entirely fit, "This scum owes me a significant amount of money, so if you're telling me to walk away from collecting it, I'll assume that you'll pay for him. So I'll ask this nicely." He leaned in close to Criella. "Where is my money." As soon as he leaned in, her fire dissipated, which caught both of us off guard.
"I cannot pay you now," she began, and i could see her Adams apple move as she desperately tried to come up with an answer for him. "I'm sure we can do more for you than just give you money. Perhaps there is something you need help with." He squinted at her and grinned.
"I'd ask ya, little lady, but I don't think you'd survive, the two of you's seem rather scrawny." At this point I felt the need to interject.
"I guarantee you sir, this is not the truth. We are more than capable of holding our own in a fight, and we've dealt with many a creature in our travel."
"You? What have you dealt with half-elf? You're so skinny an Ankheg could bite you in two and still have enough room for another one of you." The orc grabbed his stomach as he roared at his own joke. "But if you wanna do something sure, I might have some way you can repay his debt." He looked back at the passed out figure, who was now being helped by the innkeeper. "He goes with you though, and if he dies, you still pay." He chuckled, "There's a cave about three miles west of here, in there lives a tribe of Kobolds who stole something of mine. Retrieve it and I'll see his debt paid."
With that note, the massive orc stormed off. I turned to Criella, grabbed her arm, and pulled her to the corner. "what the hell did you just do?" I nearly shouted at her, I was so angry.
"We have to keep moving, we can't be bogged down by some random quest. What were you thinking?"
"I was thinking," she snarled and pulled her arm away from me. "That we should be protecting the innocent. You taught me that."
"Goddammit I hate it when you're right" I laughed at her. "Alright lets get some food."
